LOCAL SURGEON TO PARTICIPATE IN ULTRAMARATHON TO

RAISE AWARENESS ABOUT VASCULAR HEALTH, LIMB PRESERVATION

MEMPHIS, TN – Dr. Daniel Alterman, a board-certified vascular surgeon at Vascular and Vein Institute of the South (VVIS), is taking part in the upcoming “Mamba 100” ultramarathon at Shelby Farms Park on November 8th and 9th to help raise awareness about vascular health and limb preservation across the Mid-South.

“Our practice is extremely passionate about limb preservation and putting an end to unnecessary amputation due to vascular disease, and I wanted to utilize this unique challenge to help bring more attention to the patients we serve,” notes Alterman.

“Regionally, there’s a high prevalence of Peripheral Arterial Disease and subsequent amputations, and most people are unaware of the highly effective alternatives that we can offer. We want to spread the message that they don’t have to settle for losing a limb! We can often restore their circulation, keep their legs and feet intact, and keep them upright – walking, running, and enjoying their lives.”

An avid runner and marathoner, Alterman has been training for several months in anticipation of the grueling, 100-mile course – the longest race he’s attempted thus far. “I’m thankful I have the ability and opportunity to take on this challenge, and it’s important to me and our entire practice to continue to provide that same independence and high quality of life for our patients,” adds Alterman.

Peripheral Arterial Disease, or PAD, occurs when the arteries outside of the heart and brain become clogged or narrowed, resulting in poor circulation and increased risk for amputation (especially among the feet and legs), stroke, heart attack, and death.  PAD is extremely prevalent in the tri-state area due to a high rate of key risk factors, including: age (55+), diabetes, smoking/history of smoking, obesity, high blood pressure, and high cholesterol.

Founded in December of 2018 by Dr. Anton Dias Perera and Dr. Prateek Gupta, VVIS is the Mid-South’s leader in comprehensive vascular care – specializing in both minimally-invasive endovascular procedures and open surgery. To keep pace with the ever-increasing need for expert vascular care, the practice has grown to now include four board-certified vascular surgeons, six nurse practitioners, and 10 offices across Tennessee, Arkansas, and Mississippi.

VVIS strives to serve the local patient population across a multitude of insurance barriers and geographical constraints, with a special focus on addressing healthcare disparities among the underserved and minority communities.  Through its ‘VVIS Cares’ initiative, VVIS also sponsors numerous non-profit organizations and events, collaboratively supports patient-centered programs with local medical practices and community agencies, and independently hosts educational programs for both patients and providers throughout the Mid-South.
